"Oh, you sound absolutely awful!" Fan told Sal after hearing him in the livingroom hacking up something of a cold in his throat.
"I'm fine," he grunted from his chair then blew his nose.
"Oh, you're just an old bear," she brought him some lemoned tea laced with whiskey.
"And what's wrong with that?" He looked at her then. "I'm not a frisky old antelope or something?" He gave her a soured look.
"We need to do something about Aaron's father." She put her hands on her hips as if maybe she was a gypsy trying to think up her spell.
"Don't you drag him here," Sal responded as his eyes lit.
"You're sick," she wince, " Why would I do that?"
"So you can put me in the freezer, and you can have your way with him," he spat back with a sigh. "I know how you are."
She shook her head, no. He had it all wrong. "He's sleeping on the couch at Jody's and Aaron's. They don't need that." Fan sighed, how could Sal even think she'd give him up. No, Sal was her man. He was all her's. She wasn't trading him in for anyone. "We just need to find him a place. Maybe I should call Donna."
"No." He practically jumped up, but pushed up in the recliner instead. "Don't do that, it's almost Christmas." He got on the phone with management at the apartment complex and told them the situation. It would be temporary.
He cleared his throat after he got off the phone. "There's this unit no one wants. It's too small, down on the end. It just has a kitchenette."
"What are you saying?" She wanted to know.
"Just a little Christmas present from me. I said I'd pay what's due this week and next month too," he told her.
Cara stared at the funky green nail polish on her fingers. It reminded her of sour apple for some reason. She guessed she should have gone for red, but before she could say it, Kenny blurted. "Nice."
They were getting ready to go to Jay's and Amanda's. Funny, how they'd recently gone with those two out for pizza and a stroll at the park during the Christmas season. Everyone seemed to be getting along. Of course, this meant she nor Jay spoke to each other. But she was seeing him in a different light too. He wasn't that kid she remembered. No, he was a grownup now. Somehow, he just made her want Kenny more. She didn't know he could have this kind of effect on her. It was all so puzzling. But she had no idea how to even want to explain it.
After all, she really did like Amanda. No way could she hurt her. Although, there was a time she knew she would have thrived in that kind of thing. She winced back at Kenny, was this all his fault?
"What if we get over there and we can't get back?" Kenny said on their drive as the snow was coming down heavier. He said he heard on the news how bad the wind was supposed to get. The wind chill was expected in the negatives.
"I guess we'll deal," she shrugged. Cara left all her vaping stuff at home. She gritted hoping she wouldn't be a nervous wreck. She would hate the idea of bumming a cigarette off Jay. Although, he didn't smell like cigarettes anymore. Maybe he was on the patch.
Kenny gave her a nod as if he could deal. She did her best not to share her laugh.
"What's so funny?" He asked as he was turning off toward Jay and Amanda's house which was only a few blocks from the apartment complex where the rest of the family stayed.
"We are," she smirked with a shrug. "Who would have thunk it?" She smiled more.
Interesting :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad things are looking up..inspite of the cold weather!
ReplyDeleteThat's a gret thing to do.
ReplyDeleteCara's thoughts about Jy were interesting. I take it they were a couple previously?

ReplyDeleteSal and Fan's exchange about Aaron's father is so spirited:
ReplyDelete"Don't you drag him here," Sal responded as his eyes lit.
"You're sick," she winced, " Why would I do that?"
"So you can put me in the freezer, and you can have your way with him," he spat back with a sigh. "I know how you are."
Oh, Fan! I love that Sal is so honest with her -- but also that she would never betray him. On a more serious note, it was very kind of Sal to pay for Aaron's father's apartment for the month. Still, I wonder what drama it will bring . . .
And as for the Cara and Kenny story, this is such a sweet and fun beginning:
"Cara stared at the funky green nail polish on her fingers. It reminded her of sour apple for some reason. She guessed she should have gone for red, but before she could say it, Kenny blurted. "Nice." '
You say so much with a seemingly simple commentary on nail polish. 💚💚💚💚💚
Oh, I went with the funky green nail polish (Tropic Talks from Maybelline which I can't find on the internet anywhere..just at Dollar General) of course, I had to write about it! But it is interesting how sometimes, we realize we weren't meant to be with certain people, after all.
