"But I don't drink coffee," Fan heard a familiar voice say.
"What do you mean? You don't drink coffee? Don't you know how important it is to know how to make coffee?" It was Sal. She should have known. He was cooking in her kitchen and it was still dark outside.
Fan sighed, wondering who he was talking to about the importance of coffee. Sal actually said it was the essence of knowing what someone wanted when they awoke in the morning. And the trick was to get it right, every time.
She breathed in a smile as she laid in her bed on the floor. Honestly, he was too good for her, but she did need a cup of coffee with cream, no doubt.
She balanced herself up, still not assure of her surrounding. It was dark in her bedroom she stumbled to find a light switch. Fan yawned thinking why was she even up. She stood in an old white tee thinking this was no way to go to the kitchen. She found her fox face pajama bottoms, but the static electricity clung to her legs. It was a bit cold, but the heat was on, so she went barefooted to find out what was really going on.
To her surprise, it was Jared who was cooking not Sal who was sitting at the kitchen counter with a cup of coffee. As soon as he saw her, he poured her a cup.
"Looks like I got some help for you," Sal said. Naturally, Jared didn't say a thing. The last time they'd talked they'd been too harsh to each other and she guessed she was just as embarrassed as Jared to say a word.
She cradled her cup of creamed coffee. It was too early to speak so she kept listening.
Sal told her that Jared was staying with him. They both understood she needed her space. "But maybe he can help you down at the Senior Center," Sal told her Jared wasn't getting many hours at Jimmy John's.
Fan looked Jared over. He seemed a little tired, but not totally. He was being stoic.
"Sure," she shrugged. She'd find something for him to do, even if it were peeling potatoes.
Interesting development.
