Rex stalled. He just couldn't do it. He couldn't face Kelsey. He came to the hospital, but he didn't want to be there for the delivery. As it was, Jack had been there for the duration.
"I just don't want to upset her." Rex told Jack even if the real reason was that he didn't want to see the grossness of it.
"You sure?" Jack was willing to let him take over.
"Yeah, I'm sure." He felt like throwing up, already. His nerves were getting to him. He didn't want to see her in pain. He just wanted someone to come out and tell him the baby way born. Even then, he didn't know if he wanted to be the first to hold it. He could stay on the side-lines. He'd pretty much stayed in the dark during most of this, anyway. At least, she wanted to keep the baby now and maybe, maybe he'd have a chance to be a weekend Dad if nothing else, but he didn't expect that anytime soon. As it was, he was even slow to call his parents. Finally he called Nick told him the news.
"Maybe you could call them." Rex still couldn't believe it. It was a shock. It just didn't seem quite real to him.
Nick told him he would. They were on their way. He guessed he wanted Nick and Heath's support. But he didn't know why. He wasn't doing anything. What was he suppose to do? Get flowers? A teddy bear? Instead he reached for his cell and called Lisa, the first girl he'd ever really been in love with. Maybe she was the only girl he'd ever loved.
"Hey, I'm gonna be Dad." He told her. It felt like butterflies in his stomach. Of course, she didn't pick up. It was quite early in the morning. Maybe it was just as well that he left her message. He wasn't sure what he'd say if he heard her voice. It would bring back too many memories of a forgotten time. Even if he hadn't thought he'd be still so emotional about it.
He sat down then and thought about the child they could have had. How old would it have been now? Probably starting school by now. Maybe. He wished he wouldn't think about what could have been. But then maybe he wouldn't feel so stuck in his life right now. Maybe he would be different. Rex was choking up. Feeling more alone now than he ever thought possible.
Just then Jack motioned for him to come with him. Got him dressed in a paper gown.
"You don't want to miss this, you don't." He pushed him through the doors, and that's when Rex got first glimpse of what was really happening in the labor room.
