"How long do you think it'll be?" Jack's Dad said over the phone.
It wasn't like Kelsey remembered any emergency numbers. Jack had to wonder if she were doing it on purpose. He felt a bit foolish being here, but suddenly it seemed to be she was only counting on him.
"I dunno." They'd rushed in so much to monitor. He didn't know why he hadn't noticed sooner that she was pregnant. "Look, I had nothing to do with this. I just saw this car fly by the place and well, it stopped not a hundred yards or so. I had to see what was going on."
"Its a good thing you did." His dad then said. Jack just nodded. At least his Dad wasn't mad. They talked a bit more about the house and how Jack planned to load up Grady's things as soon as he could. Finally Jack put his cell away. The nurse said she'd been asking for him.
Of course, he saw that fear in her big dark eyes that she was troubled.
"Everything turned out all right, didn't it?" He smiled as if she needed one more than he did. She had big bandage on her forehead now. She looked tired and didn't say anything. "Is there anyone I can call? Anyone." She shook her head, no. "What are you gonna do, just drive out of here, then?"
She started to cry . He came over and sat there looking at her.
"So you got like two months to go, don't you?" He winced then.
"What?" She winced.
"So that's your secret?" He smiled. "I hardly noticed, you know." He looked at her stomach.. Then at her. He knew she wasn't too pleased that he'd brought that up. "So I guess, you don't have a place or anything?" He shrugged. He had a feeling she'd never really know what a close call that was on her little roadtrip.
She shook her head, no.
Jack hoped he didn't regret this.
