Heath was a wreck. He almost had it out with his Dad over his sister. Of course, he was worried about Amber, but his father wasn't. He knew his mother was sick with worry. Naturally, he was sure Amber was with Kyle. She just wouldn't go off, anywhere.
But he could see that she stood up to him. Amber was going to do things her way or else. She was deciding her own life. Their Dad wasn't going to tell her what she could and could not do. She wanted to have birth control pills, and you would have thought she had commited the biggest sin.
It wasn't until later that he found out from Kyle that Amber was with him. Heath knew it would turn out that way. At least his mother could rest easy. He knew she'd had had a lot of sleepless nights. Heath had to wonder if his Dad had any idea how he effected any of them, or if he even cared. Still, it was like walking on egg shells around him. No one would ever know what would exactly set him off. Now he was giving them all the silent treatment.
Heath went home to find Nick with Rex and Jack. They had set off a few fireworks down the street at the park. They could see the fireworks from the river. It was a rather warm evening, but at least Heath had made it in time to be there for the fireworks at dark.
"I feel like my head is going to bust." He told Nick, but he saw that Jack had his hands full. Somebody was going to sleep in his lap. Heath looked at the boy, a bit puzzled.
"Who was that?" Heath wanted to know once they got back to the house for a little wine before bed. Jack had gone home then.
"I forgot to mention him. That's Grady." Nick shrugged. They were alone now. Rex was off making a phone call to someone on his cell.
"Grady? Jack never mentioned he had a kid." Heath winced as he drank the cold white wine. It was refreshing, but not really doing much for his headache.
"Its not his kid. Some friend of his went out of town." Nick sipped his white wine.
"Somebody actually trusts him with their kid?" Heath thought that was kind of funny.
"He's pretty serious about Grady. You know, he's kind of...nice. Yeah, that's what he is. He grilled steak today." Nick told him.
"I don't know what's happened to him." Heath's bit his bottom lip. "I'm getting where I kind of like the guy and I don't know why I should."
Nick just smiled and took another sip of his wine.
