They were out at the animal shelter when the call came in. It was about Kelsey.
"Look, we're getting a dog, not a kid." Heath knew where this was going, but as it was they'd gone to the hospital to see about her.
And yes, Nick had decided. He wanted to help. Before Heath could stop him, he'd flat out told her they'd adopt her baby.
"Why did you say that?" Heath wasn't nearly as kind.
"I thought you wanted kids." Nick was sure they were on the same page about this, but possibly in different chapters of their lives.
"When we can afford them." Heath just glared back. They were down in hospital parking lot now and Heath was practically walking in circles. "Don't give her this false hope!" Heath hugged himself as if he would not have a part of this. "This is between her and your brother."
Nick shook his head. It was just, Kelsey was family, and he didn't want to see Kelsey give away her baby to anyone.
"Look, she's not due until September. Maybe, things will have changed by then. But if she needs to get away and stay with us. Its the least we could do." Nick told him.
"Are you kidding me!" Heath was tense now. "We only have a bed. Nothing more. What are we going to do? Huh?"
He guessed he hadn't thought that far ahead.
"We can fix this. We can. We'll go to garage sales. Estate sale. Something. We can make our house a home." Nick was sure of it.
Heath just shook his head as if Nick had bit off more than he could chew.
