What was Jack trying to do to him? Heath had to wonder. No apology. Nothing. Just a puppy. As if that would fix everything.
Well, it wasn't quite like he always imagined. Seeing him, now. Heath guessed Jack and Nick were friends. Maybe. At least there had been no name calling. No fighting. No ugliness. Perhaps Jack had grown up. Perhaps Jack didn't want forgiveness. Instead, he'd earn it.
Granted, Heath had never known anyone quite like Jack. It was as if he had two different personalities. There had been the guy who was crazy about him, and then the one who wouldn't look at him unless he saw his fist first. But that was then. This was now. And Jack had had a black lab called Doctor.
Heath set on the steps of the front porch and rubbed Doc's head. He hadn't a clue how to potty train a puppy. He guessed he was just going to have to go to the library. Then he wondered if they could even check books out from the library where Nick worked. It was across the state line.
He wondered where the library was around here. He wanted to think about anything about what was going on in Nick's head right now. He wanted to stay mad at him, but he couldn't. He knew Nick wanted to do the right thing. But honestly, Heath didn't feel it was his call to make. This was something Rex and Kelsey were going to have to decide on.
Just then Nick pulled into the driveway. Heath's sister, Amber was with him. Naturally, she was all lovey with the puppy.
"So he brought it to you, after all." Nick smiled.
"You knew?" Heath winced.
"Well, he talked about it." Nick shrugged. "I didn't know if he would."
"You talk to him? About me?" Heath didn't know he liked that. Exactly.
"It just came up, OK. I didn't really talk to him about you. All right." Nick sighed.
"I didn't know what to think when Jack showed up." Heath shook his head.
"Well, I think he's kind of woke up to the fact that he's really alone." Nick told him.
"What are we suppose to do about that?" Heath winced.
"Nothing. But, I guess, be his friend. Not like we have to be his best friend." Nick assured him. Heath knew he definitely wasn't up for that.
